This mission is in preparation for sending a manned Japanese lunar rover to the moon, which is scheduled for 2029. A reconnaissance robot is needed to plot a route, study the ground along the path of the lunar rover, search for obstacles, etc. This is not a tool for studying the Moon, as such, but an assistant machine, therefore the requirements for it are appropriate. In particular, the robot is very compact and weighs only 250 grams.

The delivery of the robot to the Moon will be handled by a private company Ispace, during the flight it will have the shape of a ball, and when it is on the surface of the Moon it will open up, preparing the wheels and navigation aids for operation. The concept was invented at Doshish University, Sony engineers are directly involved in the development of the robot, and the toy manufacturer Tomy is responsible for the design. It is possible that this approach will mark the beginning of a new era in the field of creating vehicles for the study of other space objects.
